Career Investments Boost Engagement at Intel

In the early '80s, Intel's revenue grew from $1 billion a year to more than $35 billion by the end of the '90s.  Career growth wasn't a problem, as it took more people in jobs of increasing complexity to drive that growth.  The company's career development philosophy of "you own your own employability" successfully created a spirit of self-driven continuous improvement consistent with its results-driven culture.

By 2006, growth propelled so many careers, need slowed and the company prepared for new, more competitive markets. CEO Paul Otellini drove a focus on efficiency, resulting in a company-wide cost structure reduction, but employees had concerns about what a leaner company might mean for their careers. Knowing employee career satisfaction is a key driver of engagement and retention, Intel talent managers had to do something different in the new environment.

To drive the company's career development strategy, talent leaders shifted the "you own your own employability" philosophy to one emphasizing the partnership between employee, manager and company.  The strategy sought to promote three actions: increase managers' accountability for helping employees with career development, create a single, corporate-wide career development model and provide an online portal with tools and resources.
