In the health care setting, key conversations can be life saving. Understanding the belief systems and cultural traditions or nuances regarding wellness or certain chronic conditions among diverse patients can significantly alter treatment options and recommendations. Exploring these cultural frameworks is challenging for healthcare providers who often have limited time with patients or their caregivers.
Cultural Competency in Healthcare introduces participants to key elements of diversity that must be considered in the healthcare setting, and strategies for engaging patients in a respectful manner—a core underpinning of cross- cultural competence. The program also approaches wellness from a cultural context and discusses how to address cultural views during a wide range of health interactions—detection, diagnosis, and treatment.
